Why I'm Studying Japanese

Although I'm planning on majoring in Mechanical Engineering, I decided to take Japanese as one of my non-technical electives. I have visited Japan in the past and plan to return again with it being one of my favorite vacation sites. For one thing, I love the food. Trying out different local ramen shops is easily one of my favorite options when I'm hungry. I also find the shopping districts to be very well suited to things that I'm interested in. Arcades and technology stores have much more prominence in certain parts of Tokyo than I'm used to, which I'm a big fan of.
Another reason that I am studying Japanese is so that I can explore potential career opportunities among Japanese companies and research groups. A lot of cutting edge developments that I find very interesting are taking place in Japan, so having experience with the language will be a helpful skill if I plan on working with or at a tech site in Japan.

  1. I'm also looking to possibly work in Japan! They have many astro research programs and are finishing enhancing their underground gravitational wave detector KAGRA. JAXA (the Japanese equivalent of NASA) launched the Hayabusa2 project in 2014 which successfully extracted material from a passing asteroid and will be returning next year! わたしもにほんでたべるのがだいすきです。

    1. Those look like some pretty interesting projects! I figured Japan had a similar space program, nice to learn it's called JAXA. Thanks for sharing the info!

  2. I also love ramen a lot. I visited Japan for the first time this past summer and did an internship there for five weeks. Before going, I barely knew anything about the Japanese language aside from a few survival phrases (like おすすめはなんですか, which was very helpful in the ramen shops). But I knew a fair deal about the Japanese culture, especially the FOOD culture. I've loved Japanese food from a young age and have always been fascinated by the eating culture. When I came back from Japan, however, I became pescatarian which, unfortunately, means that ramen options are limited. Let me know if you know of any good vegetarian or pescatarian ramen places in New York!

    1. Glad we share that food interest! Totto Ramen is pretty good and I know they have a vegetarian option. Might be worth trying!

  3. Definitely think that learning Japanese would be helpful for finding more opportunities in the tech space. I'm also in engineering (CS here!) and I've heard that a lot of Japanese tech/engineering companies prefer Japanese speaking employees so that's also partly why I decided to take Japanese too. Also a huge fan of arcades heh

    1. Good to know there's more SEAS students taking the class. Best of luck with your future pursuits, whether Japanese related or not. And YES I'm happy someone else appreciates arcades!!

  4. What kinds of technology are you interested in that are cutting-edge in Japan right now? I'm very curious.

There's no end to Japanese cuisine. There are more Michelin-starred French restaurants in Tokyo than in Paris. It's like the country has made eating into a hobby.

    1. My biggest interest in technology for Japan would have to be robotics. To be specific, I find the use of robots in the service industry as well as with android based applications to be very interesting. And very true on Japanese food! I hope to try out some options when I visit in the near future, maybe even in those Michelin-starred places.
